Description
Goddess Durga is cast seated on her lion, her arms fanning out on both sides with an attribute carried in each hand. The lion is modelled through to the paws and the tail, so the two figures share one silhouette rather than sitting on a flat backplate.
The casting is oxidised and then polished back, which leaves the recesses dark and lifts the raised edges into light: the crown, the pleats of the dhoti, the mane along the lion's shoulder. The reverse is hollowed and lightly textured from the mould, which keeps the weight down for a piece of this size.
Durga is worshipped through the nine nights of Navratri, and the lion is her vahana. A long tapered bail on a jump ring holds the figure square to the chest, and takes a heavier chain or a cord.
