In India, silver is the metal of the feet. Gold was kept for the upper body; the ankle has always worn silver, and a payal in sterling silver is the tradition itself rather than a substitute for it. Ours are made in Surat. The payal are chandi ki payal with ghungroo, sold in pairs and made to be heard. The anklets are lighter single pieces: multi-strand rope and bead chains, tri-tone and rose-tone sets, charm anklets, most with an adjustable extender.
